I've been struggling a lot with this short film. I thought, going into it, that I knew what I was doing. I was completely wrong. I feel like the idea I have is really cool, but I don't have the skills or experience to execute it how I would want to. Although I don't want to quit and give up, I really don't think I'm ready for this. I'm coming up with a backup plan incase I feel like this is too much for me. I might work with another student and create short videos about cool places around St. Louis. Making a short film is a lot harder than I ever imagined, and I haven't even filmed or edited anything. I think that I need more practice with simpler, shorter films and then I can work my way up to creating the cool and complex ideas that I have in mind. I hope that if I don't make this short film now, that maybe in the summer or next year I can actually edit the script, film it, and edit it to make my idea come to life, but for now I'm on the fence on what I want to do.

For these next few months I'm actually creating my first ever short film! I've had this idea since I was in middle school, and I'm finally (hopefully) making my vision come to life! I didn't realize how difficult it was to actually create a script. I noticed that there wasn't really a guided outline on how to write a script, so I had to do what I knew how to do. I think the script turned out pretty well. The film is about a pair of glasses that can see into the future. When I thought of this idea in middle school I didn't really have a plot, or resolution or anything, but my classmates helped me brainstorm and I think I have an awesome idea! I was surprised at how much work it actually took to just do the first step of this process. So far, I'm really enjoying this project because I feel like I can put my own creative spin on it. I like doing news packages, but I feel like I can't make them mine. With this short film, I'm pretty much able to do whatever I want and I'm really excited to explore my imagination and creativity with this new journey!
I'm super excited to announce that I submitted a news package to the first ever White House film festival! The topic was on how technology has impacted schools and learning. I decided to focus on a flipped classroom. My math teacher makes self guided notes videos and our homework is to learn the lesson at home. So I interviewed my math teacher and I think it was a really successful interview. I got a lot of good sound bytes. I waiting until last minute to get B-Roll, which was a mistake. I didn't have enough, but I made do with what I had. I'm actually going to be modifying the package I submitted to the White House and improve it for my actual project. Overall, I think it was a good learning experience. I stayed for 3 hours after school to finish it, but I think it was worth it!!
My December project was a little different than usual. As the semester came to an end, we got the opportunity to make a short package for HEC-TV. Our final was gathering the media needed to make this package. I chose to focus on how dogs see the world. I had a cool idea of showing side by side videos, but color-correcting one to look like a dog's vision. It didn't work out that way so I got some gopro clips literally from a dogs point of view. Tim Gore, from HEC-TV, gave me some footage from a go pro he attached to his dogs collar. It was perfect! I color corrected it to match how dogs see and I was really proud of that. I didn't have an interview, so every sound bite was either a voice over, or music. It was a little different and I didn't feel as confident, but I think it turned out okay and they are using it! I'm really excited to have one of my videos in their show. For November I decided to do a story on the Sparkle Effect Club at my high school. This is a nation-wide club but Ali Gold (sophomore) recently brought it to Ladue. I think it's so cool that she did all of this. I got the opportunity to sit in and film one of their practices and I couldn't stop smiling. I had over 100 clips of B-Roll because everything was just so awesome! I loved seeing the smiles on everyones faces. It was a really cool experience and I hope to be part of that club next year. The main interview is Ali explaining what the Sparkle Effect is but I also got a few great sound bites from a girl named Leah who has down syndrome. Throughout practice Leah was cracking everyone up! She has the best personality. I'm really excited to be putting this package together. I think it has a lot of great potential. Clickhere to find out more about the Sparkle Effect. October is breast cancer awareness month. To celebrate, I decided to make a video honoring some survivors. In my project, I feature two amazing women. One woman who I interviewed, Diane Gallant, actually wrote a book for every Gateway To Hope donor. It was so inspirational to see these women with a smile on their face after everything they have been through. I didn't get enough B-Roll, so finding the sound bites I needed was more difficult. I couldn't include everything I wanted to because I didn't have enough B-Roll. I really enjoyed creating this project. Click here to visit the Gateway To Hope website! This month I worked on the class of 1973's 40th reunion video. Most of my classmates were either shooting a short film or doing interviews for HEC-TV or PBS. I like interviewing, but I wanted to do something more creative. My teacher, Mr. Goble, sent my classmates and me an e-mail asking if anyone would be interested in making a short parody film for the Ladue class of 1973. I was very excited because I could get the chance to be creative. I spent many days preparing and the filming day didn't go as planned. I found out there was no real script or story line. I didn't want to give up on the project because I didn't want to let my client down, but I also didn't want to get a bad grade. My client wanted a 5-10 minute short film but I had to do what was best for both situations and cut it down to a :90 second montage. I made one and finished but wasn't too satisfied. I was looking through background music and found the perfect song and I visioned a great montage that I could put together. I trashed my old project and created this one! It was a rocky road but it taught me a lot and gave me a chance to be creative. Go to my videos page to check it out!! |
