For our spring final, we were assigned to either make a How-to video, a what-not-to-do video, or tour a significant location. The videos were allowed to be real or parody. For some reason, I had such a difficult time coming up with an idea. I couldn't decide if I wanted to do something serious, or funny, and I couldn't choose which type of video I wanted to make. Finally, I thought of my idea and I went in my basement and filmed it. I tried to do something a little bit different, and I think I achieved that goal. I'm actually really proud with how it turned out. I spent a long time adding different effects to make it just right. Head over to my videos page to check it out!

This month, a classmate and I decided to make a video dedicated to our class' seniors to air on their last show. We interviewed each student individually and split up the work. I took three students, and he took the other three and we each made 40 second packages highlighting them. Within the 40 seconds we included B-ROLL and pictures of each student over the course of their time in Broadcast Technology. I had a lot of fun doing this project because there was no real guideline. I made each video unique to each person's personality. It was a lot of fun to be able to be creative and have fun with this project. I'm really excited for the seniors to see it because I think they'll really like it. I made sure to include a balance of humor and sincerity. Doing this project made me realize how much I'll miss the seniors next year, but I'm excited to wrap up another amazing year. I can't wait to find out what our final project is going to be.
This month I decided to take part in our partnership with a local television broadcast station, HEC-TV. They have a show called Explore! and they asked my classmates and me to do various factoids regarding speed. I chose to make a video about the world record for the fastest time to solve a Rubiks Cube, and I did a factoid about the speed of electricity. They were really easy and fun to make. I don't typically make very short videos, but this month I decided to try it out. It was a little challenging not being able to put together a lot of sequences, but I think I did the best I could with a short timeline. I'm really happy with how they turned out and it's really cool that I was given the opportunity to work with professionals.
Last month I decided to re-visit the Ram Rap music video. I had to take it offline due to some misheard lyrics, so I just cut a section out. I learned a few new editing techniques and I watched a bunch of other music videos to get inspiration. I think the improved version is so much better. I cut the clips a lot shorter and to the beat. Some of the work was super tedious, but I think the outcome is awesome. The only bad thing about this project is that it's not getting the same attention it did when I first released it. After I uploaded the original version, I hit over 1,000 views in less than a week. Now, it's not getting shared as much since people have already seen it once. Overall, I'm really proud of myself for going back and re-editing it. Here's what the final edit looks like in Final Cut Pro.
This month was our final project. We were given a very simplistic prompt. These were our rules:
You must create a video responding to one of the four prompts. You may NOT change or reword ANY of the words in the prompt. 1. Black and White 2. Day and Night 3. Left or Right 4. Win or Lose Your video MUST include your prompt is some way shape or form. You can say the prompt, offer it as text, have someone else say it...ultimately it doesn’t matter how you include it, but you MUST CLEARLY INCLUDE it! I had a hard time figuring out what I wanted to do. I waited way too long to make my decision. I chose to do a commentary because it was fast, I had never done it before, and I could get my voice heard. I spoke about the new schedule changes that my school is putting in place next school year and I'm really passionate about it. I don't like the proposed change at all. I've talked to a bunch of people and expressed my opinion to the administration, but I thought I could advocate in one more way, through a video. It was surprisingly easy to film and edit and I really like the outcome. I haven't done a news package in awhile, so I figured I was due for one. Recently, everyone has been talking about the new schedule change that Ladue High School might implement next school year. One of the biggest concerns is the possible elimination of Academic Lab. This is a class everyone has second hour every other day. It's a time for students to work on homework, meet with teachers, and collaborate with other students. I thought it would be really cool to make a package about it to put an end to the thousands of rumors that float around the school. It was a little difficult to get interesting B-Roll, since the topic was just about schedule changes. It can't really be visualized. I used some really cool angles that I hope are more visually interesting than just wide-medium-tight. It was a good experience to learn about all different types of shots. I created some amazing sequences with the B-Roll I got. I've never had shots that go together so well before! The only downside to this project was that the final decision is being announced in December, so the information I provide for my audience isn't definite. I think I'll make a short multimedia package once the new schedule is released. Overall, I think this is one of my best packages that I've ever made. I hope students and faculty find it informative and interesting.
This month I took it upon myself to create a music video to a rap I found in one of our broadcast tech folders. I was really excited for this because it was a great way for me to express some creativity and have some fun. This video was a lot of work. I filmed and edited a little bit every day for about 4 weeks. I even had a few friends help me write down the lyrics to the rap (which was very difficult.) I had a few students rap and it turned out pretty cool. It was challenging to try to diversify the video. At first, I just wanted it to show our school spirit, but I realized I needed to show more. I decided to show school spirit, the student body, the teachers, and some clubs and art programs. Like every project, it didn't turn out exactly how I had envisioned it, but I'm still pretty happy with the outcome. I'm really proud of myself for doing this because it was a risk. The music video was different than most videos we produce in this class. I'm not sure if my teacher will love the final product, but I know that the other students will really like it. This project wasn't what I expected it to be. It was really hard to find people (especially teachers) who wanted to rap and dance on camera. Overall, it was such a fun experience and I couldn't have done it without the help of all of my classmates and the people who allowed me to film them. Below is a picture of what the timeline in Final Cut Pro looks like, and that isn't even all of it!
Twice a year the Ladue Broadcast students get an opportunity to work with a local film organization, HEC-TV. I've never produced anything for them before this month. I created three short factoids for their upcoming show. One of my factoids focused on the birds with the most and least amount of feathers. Another one was about the longest paper airplane flight, and my last one showed that hummingbirds are the only birds able fly backwards. I'm not sure I love making factoids since they are so short. I feel like I don't have enough space to add my creativity. However, I like how simple it is. The show that HEC-TV produces, Explore!, is for elementary and middle school students. I had a lot of fun trying to make my videos interesting to a younger audience. I'm pretty happy with how my factoids turned out. Next month, I'm making a music video and I'm super excited. Stay tuned for more information!
I'm excited to say that I have finished my final project! I had to create a story using 19 different shots. It took me awhile to think of an idea, but then the most random idea came to my mind. It's about a boy connecting with his inner child. I'm not sure what my inspiration was for this, but I think it turned out okay. There were a few things I could have done to tell the story better. I also felt very confined because I could only use 19 shots. Overall, I think it was a really good learning experience for me. I'm definitely interested in short films a little more now. A few of my shots took place outside, but it was raining. Luckily the weather cleared up for about 20 minutes, which was just enough time to get my few outdoor shots. Even though the video didn't turn out perfect, or exactly how I envisioned it, I think it was a super fun experience to express my creativity. This month was SO much fun! I decided not to do my short film just yet due to my inexperience. My friend Reis and I got together and did a short feature on the St. Louis Zoo and the St. Louis Science Center. We hope to turn this into a mini series. The Science Center was so much fun to film at. We got a lot of cool shots. When we went to the zoo I started filming and the battery light started flashing indicating we had low battery. We debated weather we should film on my iPhone or just leave, and we ended up leaving and Reis filmed another time. I edited the intro for our little series and it turned out really awesome! I had an idea in mind, but I didn't have the time or shots to make it happen but I still love the intro I created. We are doing last minute touch ups before we turn it in today. This has been such a fun project because I was able to do it with a friend, go to fun places, and add my creative flare to it.
